Management Challenges

The Government Performance and Results Modernization Act defines major management challenges as programs or management functions that are vulnerable to waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement, and where a failure to perform well could seriously affect the ability of a Federal agency from achieving its mission or goals. The Reports Consolidation Act requires Offices of Inspector General to report annually on the most serious management and performance challenges facing their agencies. To identify the management challenges facing the U.S. Department of Education (Department), the OIG routinely examines its past audit, inspection, and investigative work; reviews reports issued by the Government Accountability Office, including reports issued to management where corrective actions have yet to be taken; assesses ongoing audit, inspection, and investigative work to identify significant vulnerabilities; and analyzes new programs and activities that could pose significant challenges because of their breadth and scope. Our reports also include a brief assessment of the Department’s progress in addressing the challenges, as well as further actions that the Department could take that could, if properly implemented, enhance the effectiveness of the Department’s programs and operations.

Below you will find links to our Management Challenges reports issued since 2010. If you have any questions pertaining to the information included in these reports, please contact the OIG Public Affairs Office.
