Identity Theft and Scams: Identity Theft

The U.S. Department of Education OIG has jurisdiction only over U.S. Department of Education programs and operations, which includes Federal student aid. If you feel your identity was used to fraudulently obtain Federal student aid or loans:

  1. Contact your loan servicer and let them know about the situation.
  2. Contact the credit reporting agencies and freeze your account so nobody else can open new credit accounts in your name.
  3. Share the information with the OIG. Learn how to file a report and submit a report to the OIG.
  4. Submit a report to the FTC online at IdentityTheft.gov or by calling (877) 438-4338.

For more information to help you recover after identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov’s list of steps to help you recover.

If you are a school official reporting a student loan fraud ring , follow these instructions from Federal Student Aid's Knowledge Center.
