Identity Theft and Scams: Education-Related Scams
The U.S. Department of Education OIG has jurisdiction only over U.S. Department of Education programs and operations. If you feel you are a victim of an educated-related scam regarding your student loans, such as scams related to debt relief, loan consolidation, or loan forgiveness; scholarships; impersonation of an Inspector General, or other:
- Contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 if you think your FSA account has been compromised.
- Contact the credit reporting agencies and freeze your account so nobody else can open new credit accounts in your name.
- Share the information with the OIG and include a copy of the email, text, or phone number related to the call you received. Learn how to file a report and submit a report to the OIG.
Other education-related scams include scholarships and calls claiming to be from an Inspector General. See our free materials to learn more these and other scams, and if you believe someone is impersonating the OIG, learn how to file a report and submit a report to the OIG.
For scams specifically targeting veterans, please contact the Veterans Administration fraud hotline.
If you are trying to determine whether or not an email, call, or ad is a scam, contact the Federal Trade Commission.
